One very important organization in promoting and solidifying the present pre-engineered, pre-fabricated metal structure industry is called the MBMA, or Metal Building Manufacturer’s Association. The intentions of this group has been, and continues to be, an unwavering pursuit of industry-wide agreement on coverage and protection rules, building code applications, and design guidelines. In 1956 the MBMA began in the U.S. with 13 original members, and it pushed ahead in its energetic work through to today.
The MBMA leads the way in giving design improvements and guidelines to fabricators. Before the MBMA, each building fabricator would set its own architectural guidelines, which led to considerable reliability and quality gaps throughout the trade. The MBMA’s design guidelines has helped to introduce a higher standard of new pre-engineered metal buildings.
At the beginning of the twenty-first century the MBMA had nearly 30 metal building manufacturers as a base membership. These manufacturers speak for almost 10,000 constructors nationwide. Nearly all pre-engineered, pre-fabricated metal building systems that are put up in the U.S. have come from MBMA member efforts. And suppliers have recently been allowed membership, in order to strengthen facts and program offerings through the MBMA.
The MBMA pioneered suitable all-metal structure wind resistance studies with wind tunnel research in the 1970s, and its findings are now used all over the world as favored coding for pre-engineered metal structure construction. The group has also encouraged and promoted thermal studies, fire rating, and snow loading assessments. And the MBMA continues with wind capacity exploration through schools and labs.
The MBMA has developed many journals that include rules for correct commercial grade metal pre-engineered roofing configuration, an annual industry market review, and many videos, presentations, and promotional materials that point out the advantages, features, and benefits of pre-engineered metal structures. The MBMA has also developed a compendium for nearly 50 years that is a useful handbook for everyone concerned with the organization. This book highlights the features of proper design, efficient structural loads, and other manufacturing functions and practices.
Also, the MBMA advises licensing programs concerning metal structure producers. A recent course looked to not only establish that a quality pre-engineered, pre-fabricated metal building product is accomplished through the production process, but also to maintain proper design and quality guidelines once the building is completed. The certification of the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) is insisted upon by the MBMA for enrollment into organization.
Headquartered in Ohio the Metal Building Manufacturer’s Association remains the most important and powerful metal structure alliance in the United States.
