The MBMA, or Metal Building Manufacturer’s Association, has been a crucial organization in promoting and establishing the present pre-engineered, pre-fabricated metal structure industry. Founded in 1956, the MBMA began in the U.S. with 13 members. The intentions of this group have always been–and continue to be–the unwavering pursuit of industry-wide agreement on coverage and protection rules, building code applications, and design guidelines.
Today, the MBMA base membership includes nearly 30 metal building manufacturers that speak for almost ten thousand constructors nationwide. Almost all pre-engineered, pre-fabricated metal building systems in the U.S. today were made possible because of group member efforts. Suppliers have recently been invited to join, and they have brought with them stronger facts and program offerings.
This organization leads the way in offering design improvements and guidelines to fabricators. Before the MBMA, each building fabricator would set its own architectural guidelines, which resulted in numerous reliability and quality gaps throughout the trade. The standardization of today’s pre-engineered metal buildings is largely due to this association’s design guidelines.
In the 1970’s, the MBMA introduced suitable all-metal structure wind resistance through wind tunnel research. These findings are now used all over as favored coding for pre-engineered metal structure construction. The group’s ventures include the promotion of thermal studies, fire rating, and snow loading assessment. The MBMA also encourages wind capacity exploration through schools and labs.
The MBMA has published many journals that include rules for correct commercial grade metal pre-engineered roofing configuration, and an annual industry market review. The organization has produced numerous videos, presentations, and promotional materials that point out the features and benefits of pre-engineered metal structures. For nearly 50 years, the MBMA has also issued an annual compendium that highlights features of proper design, efficient structural loads, and other manufacturing functions and practices. This book has become essential reading for nearly everyone involved with the organization.
This group offers licensing programs for metal structure producers. A recent course established not only the fact that a quality pre-engineered, pre-fabricated metal building product is successful once construction is complete, but also emphasizes the importance of ongoing maintenance of proper design and quality guidelines.
Certification by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) is a requirement for enrollment in the MBMA. Headquartered in Ohio, the Metal Building Manufacturer’s Association remains the most important and powerful metal structure alliance in the United States. For more information, visit: www.mbma.com.
