The Many Benefits of a Quality Steel Roof

Steel roofing can offer a practically maintenance-free environment and considerable longevity if planned and constructed correctly. Choosing the correct roofing design is important and your designer or architect must select the right roofing application and structural details to suit the needs of your steel building.

Any holes, such as openings and ducts, should be kept to a bare minimum to fully appreciate the application of pre-engineered steel building roofing. Field-cut components offset steel roof intrusions, but will cap heat and cold expansion, endanger the high-quality steel due to corroding items, and make water leaks much more probable.

Openings in endwalls or sidewalls are a much better approach as these are more easily protected from water seepage. All openings into the felt should have similar design elements and a you should put a lot of consideration into all steel openings if architectural panels with felt underlayment are used. In the ideal planning of the steel structure prior to the start of construction, consider the issue of panel movement in conjunction with preventing moisture entry. Given that proper channeling of water is essential, felt should go along the trim and into the drain, not behind it, to obtain proper draining.

Opting for ideal products is important for a proper roof application if standing-seam is considered. A “Pittsburg-style” standing-seam roof excels over the snap-on kinds. The application of structural roofing for low slopes of one quarter on twelve pitch and under is more logical than architectural steel structure products for a three on twelve pitch or larger steepness. Snap-on seams also perform poorly in high wind resistance.

Galvalume components are recommended for production and warehouse designs. Flashing for any roofing should be produced from the same supply. Copper, galvanized, or lead flashing should not be used with all-steel buildings as oxidation can occur.

Large pre-engineered steel buildings should affix a complete assembly of high caliber rain removal elements. Removing rainwater from a steel building roof is fundamental and several top quality steel building producers offer gutters and downspouts as an add-on option. When no roof drainage components are used, water can pool at the base of any steel roof and leak into the building’s interior. Improper application of the closures and adhesives of the roof can also cause this to happen.

Consider, also, that lighter gauged commercial grade steel tends to be harmed by hail much as any car would be. If you are building in an area where hailstorms are a frequent threat, you should consider the use of a thicker steel. Consider the many benefits of a steel roof and you will realize why so many steel buildings today employ these systems.
