High-Grade Steel Roofs: Considerations to Help Ensure Top Performance

Steel building roofing can afford a virtually maintenance-free environment and serviceable longevity if planned and constructed correctly. The right choice of roofing design is an important factor and your designer or architect must select the right roofing application and structural details.

Any holes such as openings and ducts should be kept to an absolute minimum to fully appreciate the application of pre-engineered steel building roofing. Field-cut components offset steel roof intrusions, but will also cap heat and cold expansion, render the premium quality steel endangered by corroding items, and make water leaks much more probable. The implementation of openings through endwalls or sidewalls is a much better approach as they are easier to protect against water seepage. All openings into the felt should have similar design elements and you should put a lot of thought into all steel openings if architectural panels with felt underlayment are used. Another situation to consider in the ideal planning of the steel structure, prior to construction beginning, is panel movement in conjunction with blocking of the entry of moisture. Given that proper channeling of water is essential, felt should follow the trim and go in the drain, not behind it, to obtain appropriate draining.

Opting for ideal products is important for a proper roof application if standing-seam is considered. A “Pittsburg-style” standing-seam roof is superior to the snap-on kinds. The application of structural roofing for low slopes of one quarter on twelve pitch and under is more logical than for a three on twelve pitch or larger steepness. Snap-on seams also perform the worst in high wind resistance.

Galvalume components are recommended for production and warehouse designs. Flashing for any roofing should be produced from the same supply. Copper, galvanized, or lead flashing should not be employed with all-steel buildings as oxidization can result.

Most large pre-engineered steel buildings should affix a complete assembly of high caliber rain removal elements. Discarding rainwater from a steel building roof is a fundamental aspect and several top quality steel building producers offer gutters and downspouts as an add-on option. If no roof drainage components are in place, water can collect at the base of any steel roof and leak into the building’s interior. Improper application of the closures and adhesives of the given roof can induce this also.

Consider also, that lighter gauged commercial grade steel tends to be damaged by a hail storm easily—much as a car might be—so thicker steel sections should be used in regions where hail is a frequent threat. Your choice in a roof and associated components should reflect your local building regulations as well as your desired design. Ensure that you opt for quality so that you get the best performance and durability possible from your roof.
